The Cotopaxi Brand Story

Cotopaxi is an exciting new arrival for us here at Urban Industry, because it combines the two things that we value most in a brand: incredible products and responsible ethics.

Since starting out in 2013, Cotopaxi has become a serious challenger brand in the outdoor space generally, but especially with bags and luggage – featuring distinctive multi-coloured designs reminiscent of patchwork (their Del Dia Collection), each individual bag being unique from any other in its combination of colours. That’s right: no two Cotopaxi bags are the same, even if they’re the same model.

Named after a volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes region, Cotopaxi was founded by Davis Smith – an American whose adventure-loving family moved from the US to Latin America when he was four years old. Growing up in those developing parts of the continent, Smith observed how lucky he was to come from a wealthy background. In the words of the man himself: “From that young age, I knew that I had a responsibility to find a way to help others.” So he went to college and embarked on an entrepreneurial career that would enable him to do exactly that.

Today, the company is a ‘Certified B Corporation’, which in short means that it “meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose”. Or as Cotopaxi themselves put it, they are out to “Do good”. That’s why the company puts 1% of its annual revenue into the Cotopaxi Foundation – which was established to help support communities in developing countries.
