The North Face’s street-friendly outdoor clothing is a perfect match for us here at Urban Industry, because it captures two vibes that we’re passionate about and rolls them into one.
That’s why we’ve stocked TNF for years, bringing you a fresh selection each season, covering the trusty functional outerwear and gear that they’re most famous for, as well as lounge-friendly hoodies, tees and other items of clothing.
The brand’s very beginnings trace back to 1966, when two hikers decided to open up their own mountaineering store in San Francisco. Two years into business, they decided to start designing and manufacturing their own gear, so they upped sticks, moved across the Bay into Berkeley and got to work.
The equipment’s quality spoke for itself (as it does to this day), and soon became popular among polar explorers and other serious outdoors-people. Hence the slogan, “Never Stop Exploring”.
And the brand never has stopped exploring. By the 1980s, TNF was also making skiing equipment, introducing it to a whole new market, which eventually trickled down into more casual audiences. And so, in the 1990s, The North Face expanded into the general outdoor clothing market, making gear for hikers, runners and all manner of nature-focused sports enthusiasts.
It was at this point that the inevitable appropriation by the streetwear community took place – and we haven’t looked back since.
