The Klattermusen Brand Story

Klattermusen is far from a typical outdoor brand, and that’s a big part of why we love it here at Urban Industry.

They’ve achieved that elusive balance between technical substance and everyday style – which many outdoor brands attempt but few actually manage. Klattermusen, as the brand itself puts it, is “refined outdoor equipment”. Yes, it will see you safely up and down a mountain in treacherous conditions, but you also wouldn’t look out of place ordering coffee in it or wearing it to the office. Maybe it has something to do with them being Swedish?

The brand was born in 1975, when a group of climbers from the ski resort of Åre came together. It started out simply as a DIY workshop where the guys could turn their ideas for new technical products into prototypes, experimenting with fabrics and designs along the way. Fast-forward a few years into the 1980s, and Klattermusen is a highly respected brand among the outdoor community in Sweden and further afield.

That ingenuity and passion remains to this day, more than 45 years later. They’ve never stopped pioneering. Another – equally important – part of why we love the brand is that it has an environmental conscience, striving for greater sustainability all the time. As Klattermusen themselves put it: “Our philosophy on how to reduce environmental impact today is the same as it was in 1975: repair equipment until it falls apart and to continually strive to improve constructions.” But not just that: they source materials from post-consumer waste, continually review their manufacturing processes and do all of the other stuff you’d expect of any responsible outdoor brand in 2020.
