The Karhu Brand Story

Finnish brand Karhu is one of our most popular trainer brands, offering fresh and distinctive shoes that also give firm nods to running heritage. 

To name just a few: the Synchron Classic, the Aria 95, the Fusion 2.0 and the Legacy 96.

How do they manage to tread that line so confidently? Well, it probably has something to do with the fact that Karhu is in fact one of the oldest and best established names in sports footwear. 

Established in 1916, in Finland’s capital city of Helsinki, the brand began life as an equipment manufacturer – chiefly javelins and discuses – before adopting the name Karhu in 1920, and expanding into the footwear market, among other product markets (such as skis in the 1930s). A piece of trivia that every sneakerhead should know: Karhu sold the three stripes trademark to adidas in the early 1950s. 

In the 1960s, Karhu began using the “M” motif that still takes centre stage on their shoe designs to this day – “M” standing for “Mestari”, the Finnish word for “Master”.
