Carhartt WIP – Dearborn, Michigan, USA. Est. 1889

Brand Story

Carhartt WIP (“Work in Progress”) is where Carhartt’s iconic workwear heritage meets modern streetwear. The WIP division was established in Europe in 1989, exactly a century after the main Carhartt brand was originally founded.

We all associate the Carhartt name with rugged functionality. Boxy canvas jackets, multi-pocketed chore coats, thick work shirts, pocket t-shirts and so on. Carhartt WIP reinterprets those blue-collar classics, taking them out of the building site and off the factory floor, and putting them out on the street – specifically the city street.

Most of the Carhartt clothing you see out and about these days is in fact Carhartt WIP. It’s still workwear, just adapted for the world of today and its many different types of workplaces. Coffee shops, offices, retail stores, gig venues, spare bedrooms, you name it.

We’ve stocked Carhartt WIP here at Urban Industry for years, because it’s a brand that we can rely on to simultaneously deliver the goods and keep things fresh. We carry the classics, such as the Michigan Coat and the Single Knee Pant, as well as the brand’s more transitory output, such as the one-off graphic tee designs and experimentations with colours and textures.
