“Hey, remember that awesome sci-fi/action movie from the 80s that kicked ass yet had a deep vein of satire running through it that distinguished it from the more meat-headed output of the era? Let’s totally remake that minus the humour and originality!” – this line of thinking spawned the abomination that was the Total Recall remake in 2010. It appears the same dickheaded approach to filmmaking is rearing its ugly head with the upcoming 2014 release of RoboCop
Directed by José Padilha (Elite Squad, Bus 174), the film will feature Joel Kinnaman(?) as protagonist Alex Murphy, the role originally played by Peter Weller. Michael Keaton and Samuel L Jackson also make an appearance but given the latter’s tendency to pop up in just about anything, I wouldn’t take it as a massive positive sign. Honestly, I don’t even care anymore. People like me will go and see this and complain about it, the movie will probably make money and we’ll be subjected to some kind of ‘sequel to the reimagining’ in 2018 or some such.
