James, or ‘Big Jim’ as he is affectionately known around Urban Industry HQ, is a relatively new addition to the team here. Graduating from warehouse assistant to working with me on the content team here at UI, he’s quietly been making inroads in no time at all. So quiet in fact that I didn’t even know he was editing and working on publishing his first art publication entitled ‘Indistinct Magazine’ in his spare time. I recently caught up with him to find out more…
1. What is Indistinct Magazine?
Indistinct Magazine is a new publication which aims to seek out and showcase upcoming artists, illustrators and photographers.
2. What inspired you to put this publication together?
I was inspired by the big arty magazines put out by Nobrow and, to be honest, I thought "how hard can it be?!". As it turns out, quite hard but not anything I couldn't do.. On top of that, like a lot of people I like the tactile side of a printed art mag so it seemed like a good project to get stuck in to.
3. What are the pros and cons of DIY publishing? What were the challenges you faced?
The best thing about the whole project is that I do everything, there's no one else to have a conflict of creative opinion with. Having said that, there's also nobody to kick me up the arse to get it finished next week.. So there was some laziness when the 'I'll get round to it' attitude kicks in. The biggest issue was switching everything to Mac from Windows earlier this year which would have put everything behind schedule for an established mag but for me, it just got finished later and I make out like that was the plan. In all it's been a huge learning curve for me which is a positive.
4. Will you turn this into a regular publication or are you working on different projects?
I am hoping to make it regular.. At the moment I think I won't be able to do much more than two per year, basically because any more than that I might have to give up the day job..
5. Where is Indistinct Magazine available? Can you buy it online?
Yes! It certainly is available online on the website (www.indistinctmagazine.bigcartel.com)
I'm on the lookout for potential stockists *cough*, but nothing as yet..
