adidas continue to stake a serious claim as to why they should be considered the leading footwear brand worldwide and most of these ‘claims’ have been spearheaded by the introduction of new innovative styles.
As many notable running silhouettes begin life, the Energy Boost arrived along with several boastful claims such as ‘game changing’, but unlike most other modern runner releases, the energy boost can genuinely back this up.
The story of the Boost starts with adidas’ relationship with German chemical company BASF. Prior to the release of Boost technology, BASF had been trying to find a way to create an expanded TPU foam which would hold the materials beneficial characteristics but loose the weight. You may be familiar withTPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) which is used regularly on other adidas silhouettes in their midsole constructions. However up to this point no one had found a way to expand the TPU to a foam structure making it lighter but still retaining its combined property of being soft and responsive at the same time.
Eventually BASF came up with a material named ‘Infinergy’ foam, presented in the form of small egg shaped beads. Having gone through a series of prototypes and many failed attempts to perfect the responsive technology, adidas and BASF eventually refined the formula, resulting in the final ‘Boost’ version. The standard Boost midsole consists of around 2,500 individual ‘Infinergy’ foam beads, which have been fused together using an innovative steam moulding process. This method melts the top layer of the bead, causing it to stick to the neighbouring particles without affecting its core structure. The result is a sole unit that adapts to the pressure of the foot and the speed the runner is moving, cushioning the foot from heel to toe considering the weight transfer for a smooth ride.
The latest shoe to feature the Energy Boost technology – the ESM M arrives with us in two separate colour ways – Vista Grey and Core Black with Silver accents. The responsive sole unit is complimented by the flexible techfit® upper which gives a sock like fit, keeping the foot supported and comfortable for a natural feel during movement. The high tech features don’t end there, we also have the TORSION® system for mid-foot integrity, welded TPU bands that wrap the foot for a secure fit, wraparound tongue for dynamic arch support and an ADIWEAR™ outsole that offers optimal durability. The shoe is also mi-coach compatible, allowing you to get the most out of your work out by monitoring progress and helping you set targets.
The adidas Originals Energy Boost ESM M Shoes are truly at the forefront of modern day running technology and are a great representation of the future of the running footwear industry. You can shop them HERE.
