From The Foreword of the book...
Los Angeles has a way of creeping up on you. From Ladera Heights to El Sereno from San Pedro to L.A. Crescenta it envelops you, spins its oil slicked web around you and kisses you with its marine layer sunrises and dramatic smog filtered sunsets. I have lived in Los Angeles and indeed called it home for eighteen years. I never thought I would say that but it’s been eighteen years and I’m still here. These photographs were made in Los Angeles at the beginning of March 2008.
Equipped with a daily map and a slew of Dickies we drove the length and breadth of the city to make these images. The light you see is the light of the city. From cloud covered gloomy days in downtown with bike messengers competing with each other on their day off to the ochres and blues of a Silverlake sunset overlooking Frog Town – few cities have this.
Dickies are the work clothes of Los Angeles. At every turn we would find a waiter, a hotel bus boy, a mail delivery person or a security guard wearing them. It was as though the city had already dressed for the shoot – of course Los Angeles wakes up everyday dressed and ready for a Dickies shoot. So many of our subjects declared “I’m not sure that I have any Dickies” and then showed up to be photographed wearing a pair of pants or a shirt explaining, “This is all I wear I just didn’t realize they were Dickies”. It’s as though the brand can be as invisible as it is omnipresent.
It’s not that often that you have the chance to photograph people at work in your own city and be compensated for it. It was a great pleasure to make these portraits – from my favorite mechanic to an old Dogtown skater who now plays harmonica and cleans pools – they all had stories. Big stories, small stories – stories of adversity and stories of commitment. Stories of dreams dreamt and stories of dreams deferred.

This spring has seen some great collaborations coming through and they don't get much better than this. Actor Jason Lee's brand, Stereo team up with OBEY's Shepard Fairey to collaborate on a set of four pro skate decks. Each deck features classic Fairey style artwork with different intricate variations on each deck.
Choose from four different designs, however leave the top deck colour to us! Each skateboard deck top has a different dye color across the wood. This colour varies from green, red, black or purple. This colour will be chosen as a blind assortment by us here when your order is placed.

Check out this great new collaboration that we've received in this week, Obey X Martha Cooper. This super limited range of t-shirts made together with New York photographer, Martha Cooper, are are now available to purchase here at Urban Industry. As always, top quality Obey pima, organics or heavyweight cottons twinned with a selection of photograph pieces that sit on each tee. As previously mentioned, these pieces are very very limited. Snooze and Loose!
'I first became familiar with Martha Cooper's photography at 15 or so years of age, like many graffiti fans, through the book SUBWAY ART. SUBWAY ART which contains Martha Cooper and Henry Chalfant's graffiti photos was first published in 1984, and is generally credited as the book that spread graffiti around the globe. I eventually met Martha as part of an art panel in 2003 and I found her to be a very genuine and positive person. I was humbled and flattered when she showed some photos of my street work she had documented in NYC. About a year later I attended the LA release party for Martha's HIP HOP FILES book. I loved the book because it contained intimate documentation of Hip Hop culture in its creative infancy. The photo's included breakdancing, graffiti, DJ's and MC's.... a crucial look at the 'do it yourself' creativity of a vibrant urban culture. Apparently, Martha's introduction to the graffiti world happened in the late 70's while she was photographing NYC street kids. Martha's photographs from this era show NYC life in economically depressed neighborhoods where people found ways to entertain themselves despite of a lack of financial and material resources. The sentiment behind these photos resonates deeply with me and I'm grateful Martha has generously opened up her archive of photos from the 70's for an Obey collaboration. I am honored to be able to collaborate with Martha Cooper.' Shepard Fairey
